Sanneke's experience (in English)

I’m really glad that I went to Nigeria.

It’s just not a place you would go on holiday to.

It begins already at the airport where you arrive, my senses and brains scanned the Kalashnikov guns in bearing, noise, smells, idiot bureaucratic procedures, beautiful people, fashion and poverty, lots of desert particles, cars, lots of beeping cars, chaos, sirens, unbelievable incomprehensible procedures, cheerfulness, kindness, and lots of help and patience.

Once in the car with the driver and supervision in the form of ‘another’ big jeep behind us with sirens and flashing lights I was wondering where I was heading….

Now I can tell that in one week I went to two different markets, the Balogun and the Lekki market. Saw twee beaches, Beach house and Tarkwa Bay.

We bought lots of materials and gave it to the seamstress……. We’ll see what is going to be made from that.

At a grocer by the wayside we’ve bought vegetables, we went in a weird supermarket with dancing personnel behind the counter.

We also saw an incredible hip beautiful art gallery, de Nike Art Gallery, with amazing pieces, and spoke to the owner Nike.

At a widow trust fund campaign in a white tent we were introduced as the Danish delegation… yes yes… APPLAUSE!

We ate and drank wine in the hippest place in Lagos.

With great people we celebrated at a house party, talked to lots of interesting people for whom Viv and I had stuccoed and varnished their standing tables.

Met Glory and her daughter Elisabeth and locked them into my heart.

Walked Ayo, exercised with a personal trainer, joined aqua jogging, got to know all the security guys on the terrain, got to know internet repairers and woke them up….. He was simply sleeping on the sofa!

I’m very aware that I saw Lagos from a very privileged position. I do hope that I have been able to become friends with drivers and maids….. and everything else that surrounds it.

It was wonderful to see how fast Rob and Viv surrounded themselves with vibrant wonderful people! Compliments!
